Decorating children's rooms is a lot of fun if you have time on your hands. Children have a very short attention span. They like to explore, look around, discover and have fun. Colours, characters, glitter and lights are a few things children would appreciate in their rooms.
It is important to keep the personality of your child in mind while decorating his/her room. This is because girls and boys each have a different perspective as to what a perfect room would be.
For girls, the most popular idea is a Disney Princess themed room. Pink or purple coloured walls, huge pink soft duvets, a mirror lined with pink bulbs, walls with stencilled "PRINCESS" written on them and fur lined closet doors. Most girls would love this.
Some nature-lovers would like a park-themed fresh-looking room. This would include light blue walls with painted grass blades near the base. If its a boy, huge stick-ons of beach-balls and surfboards could be stuck. If its a girl's room, stencilled butterflies or flowers would look really pretty. The lights in this room should be bright and curtains very filmy so that sunlight hours in. Moreover, sand-art bottles and odd sea-shells could be placed on tables or mantelpieces.
For boys, a standard, blue room is very popular. But this could be made more fun by placing lots of beanbags of different shades of blue in the room. The cupboards or walls can be graffiti on. For example, boys could stencil logos of their favourite football teams or hang lots of posters.
What really adds character to a room is he walls. Three walls of a pale colour and one main wall in a bright colour really makes the room appear larger and prettier. Let the child add his/her own personal touches. Let the girls sling their beaded little necklaces across the mirror or set their dolls in a line across the room. Let the boys, hang large posters of their favourite movies or sportsmen.
You have to stay in touch with the favourite characters amongst children to decorate their rooms. Disney movie characters, like Cinderella, Nemo and Lion King are very popular amongst children. Moreover, characters like Batman, Superman and Spiderman are also amongst the favourites.
Just let the kids' rooms be a place where the reality ends and the fantasy starts. Don't let the rooms be dull or boring. The rooms should also have a few books to promote education. The child should be encouraged to play freely and explore and make the room his/her own. Let there be lots of free space for the kid to play and fantasize and improvise new games. The toy storage should not be too closed or boring. Its better to have cute net baskets or open storage which would interest the children and make it easier for them to clean up later.
