Glucose is a natural part of body metabolism. The food you eat is transformed into glucose that goes into the bloodstream. At a certain point the pancreas produces insulin which under normal circumstances helps to move excess glucose into the myriad of cells in the body where it can be used for energy. But some foods translate very quickly into glucose causing a dramatic increase in blood sugar. The pancreas must then produce a great amount of insulin to move the excess glucose out of the bloodstream. This overtaxes the pancreas and with constant consumption of high glycemic foods, the pancreas ultimately burns itself out leading to diabetes.
With the hectic pace of life that most of us live, we eat simple carbohydrate foods which consists of highly processed foods that are easy to digest. It is this kind of diet that causes the health problems of cancer, diabetes and heart disease that we see around us today.
Eating a diet of whole foods, fresh fruit and vegetables is what can help regulate and keep blood sugar in balance, but we don't often eat such foods much less have the time to prepare them. But high fiber foods are the best and healthiest for us. Few of us eat fresh fruits and vegetables.
What lowers blood sugar?
Drugs certainly do, but all of the drugs currently used to treat diabetes have severe side effects and do nothing to treat the complications of diabetes that leads to blindness and amputations of the feet as nerves are easily damaged from excess blood sugar.
Fully 90% of all diabetics are overweight or obese. So losing weight goes a long way to reducing blood sugar. It has been shown that the extra "spare tire" we carry around acts much like a separate organ in the body secreting compounds that are directly responsible for the inability of the cells to open up to accept glucose, a condition known as Insulin Resistance. Because the cells cannot open up high levels of blood sugar and insulin remains in the bloodstream where it damages the kidneys, heart and impairs overall overall circulation.
Most people simply do not exercise regularly. This too has an effect on the levels of blood sugar. We are meant to be ACTIVE. A sedentary lifestyle works against the maintenance of proper health and well-being.
Excessive smoking, drinking and stress levels all have a damaging effect on all body organ functions.
