To understand the Sabbath we must first answer some questions to paint the whole picture. What day was it originally and what does it mean to you and I? How did the Sabbath come into place with all its rules and regulations? We will also look at what the Sabbath is "not". Each question answered and fact added will put another brush stroke on this portrait until a beautiful Picasso is produced. The finished product will help us get a better understanding of this day.
ORIGINAL SABBATH AND RULES
Let's paint our foundation. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and on the seventh day he rested. God rested to be an example for us, not because he ran out of power and had to plug himself into an inter-galactic generator to recoup. He is self-sustaining and never needs rest. Hey, is anything too hard for the Lord? He is infinite and everything in his universe is finite, which science proves. I'll put the first brush strokes down on canvas with a dazzling blue.
The original Sabbath is Saturday, handed down to Moses when God gave him the Ten Commandments. What the Sabbath means to men, women and children is they are not to work, neither their mommas nor daddies, their children, the ox, any beast even the strangers they knew were not to be caused to work. It is a day to reflect and focus in on the Lord and his goodness. If anyone caused anyone else to work on the Sabbath, it was considered breaking the law and punishable by death. Lets add a few brushstrokes of red to our portrait.
The law was strict. If you and your family had a picnic and caused the local ant hill workers to race across the park to claim their crumbs and hall them all the way back to their hole, here comes your local the Sabbath police to dote you over the head with their batons.
The Seventh Day Adventist church is a Christian Protestant denomination, which still observes the original Sabbath of Saturday. That's fine, no problem with that because it's biblical. But then they also teach that all other Christian denominations that don't observe this original day are apart of the apostate church and that we are doomed to hell and God's fiery judgment.
What? Oh.. Wait.. Stop the train! "What they talkin' bout Willis?"
First of all, ask any Adventist if they keep the law and they will say, "yes". But once you start asking more questions and get detailed, it's almost impossible for them to keep it the way it was originally intended. If you struck on a candle in the Old Testament
