It almost seems as if you have to be a part of Hollywood or the New York City scene to be material for fame or celebrity, and though it may end up that way, many celebrities, musicians and politicians hail from middle America,Indiana included. The following celebrities not only sprouted in this part of the bread basket area themselves but many of them even make frequent reference to their upbringing in this midlands state.
1. LARRY BIRD. Lawrence Joseph Bird was Born December 7, 1956 in West Baden Springs, Indiana. Bird was a small forward and power forward in the NBA from 1979 to 1992 and is widely considered one of the best basketball players of all time. Some of the highlights of his career include 3 NBA championships (1981, 1984, 1986) and 3 NBA MVP awards (1984-1986).
2. MICHAEL JACKSON. Michael Joseph Jackson was born in Gary, Indiana August 29, 1958. Michael is an American entertainer and musician whose career reached extraordinary heights in the 1980's. Five of his albums have been among the world's best selling: Off The Wall, Thriller, Bad, Dangerous, and History. He started his musical career at age 11 as a member of "The Jackson 5", After that his solo career took of and he was referred to as the "King of Pop". Many of his videos such as "Thriller" and "Beat It" were very popular in a time when viewership of music videos and shows like MTV began to soar.
Jackson, at the end of his life in his forties and early fifties had many problems that made the news, including potential child molestation (which only resulted in dropped charges when he paid off his accusers), drug addiction, and extreme use of plastic surgery to alter his looks to what some considered freakish. One particularly damaging world-wide news story included his dangling of his youngest baby, "blanket" over a balcony in Germany. He died of a heart attack early in 2009. It has come out after his death that none of his children were biologically his own, which was perhaps why he made them all wear veils, as they were mostly very light blonds.
3. DAVID MICHAEL LETTERMAN. David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947 in Indianapolis, Indiana.Letterman is an American Emmy Award winning comedian and television host. His first major success on a T.V. show was Late Night with David Letterman, following the Carson show early on, which brought him to the attention of many late-night comedy fans as Carson held a monopoly on the after-news comedy hour for many years.
