Career guidance: Should you become a nurse?

There is no other profession where you can impact and touch a life like an RN can. Nursing is an exciting career where the work is hard and very demanding and the challenges you will encounter are endless, but the rewards cannot be measured. The RN with her compassion, caring and knowledge can make the difference between life and death. If death is inevitable, a nurse can be there and share the last moments of a patients life. These experiences change you as individual by making you stronger and I believe a better human being. It really teaches you not to take anything for granted and how very precious life is.

If you are thinking about becoming an RN you should consider all the benefits that the professional nurse has at her fingertips. As a professional nurse you have the opportunity to use all of your knowledge and experience in so many diverse ways. What other professional can you decide to educate a whole community or help deliver babies or get involve in research? There are even RN's who can end up managing a whole hospital. You need to use critical thinking skills and be ready to respond because someone's life is depending on it. Nursing is a profession where they are so many opportunities you will never be bored and you will be continuously learning. The medical field is ever changing and you will be part of those changes.

JOB SECURITY. In this troubled economy with so many people losing jobs this is one profession where you can always find a job. You will have options no matter where you want to live in the United States. If you have to suddenly move because of a spouse being transfered there will be no difficulty in finding a job in your new community. There are countless job openings in every state and an expectation that as the baby boomer generation starts to retire there will be more jobs than they have RN's to fill them with.

SALARIES ARE COMPETITIVE. Because of the vast amount of job opportunities, nursing is a very competitive market which increases tha salary and benefit paackages as you look into considering becoming a nurse. Depending on what article you read the avgerage median salary for an RN is approximately $50,000 and above. Some of the wages depend on location and if you consider having additional education and becoming an advanced Practice Nurse your salary can be significantly higher.

GREAT SECOND CAREER OPTION. There are many people who choose nursing as their second career choice. With the large amount of people being laid off in other industries or those that are just tired of mundane jobs, nursing gives you the opportunity to find a personal satisfaction and a chance to impact people's lives and make a difference. What other job offers you that kind of opportunity?

SCHEDULING AND FLEXIBILITY. There are very few jobs where you can choose to work the day, evening or night shift. Many full time RN's work three 12-hour shifts a week and have 4 days off. It is a perfect job for a Mom or Dad with a growing family. Nursing provides an opportunity to have a real career and still meet the demands of raising a family. You can also work part-time or choose to be a contingent RN if you do not need benefits and can actually choose the hours you want to work.

If you choose to become a Registered Nurse your opportunities are virtually unlimited. What other profession gives you as much challenge, job satisfaction and secured employment? If you are attracted to the health care profession because you want to be involved with treating and educating patients, than nursing may be the right career choice for you. Nurses are truly very special individuals and is a profession where you can say " I am proud to be a nurse."
