it possible to push the envelope of immorality and unprincipled behavior beyond yet greater humiliation? Unfortunately, the answer is affirmative.
Was "America" on its path of principles when for more than 200 years it legally permitted the enslavement of countless Africans, and to a lesser extent the indigenous population? How about when President Polk initialized his Imperial Mission with the conquering and eventual relative theft of nearly 30,000 square miles of Mexican land regardless of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo [2] of 1848? Or perhaps the expulsion of the Spaniards from Cuba at the 19th century's tail [3], and the island's consequential re-takeover that left hundreds upon hundreds dead, and eventually catapulted the rum and tobacco nation into another era of dark oppression that has yet to reach a decisive closure under Uncle Sam's cruel sanctions?
The head may thus be lowered in shameful reaction to the immoral impetus set in motion for the glorious sake of market competition and resource control. Talk about your moral high horse turning out to resemble a sickened sea horse, where again was that track of moral principles that became lost?
To avoid an extensive and sobering dissertation on the atrocities of the 20th century, how about simply regarding the hopeful dawn of this present 21st century? The United States, being woefully misguided by the current illegitimate administration (the authentic Axis of Evil), has come out of the corner in this late round with a renewed commitment to abolish any rational concept of morality through continued global warfare and domination.
Adding insult to this travesty is the sorrow of a nation falling apart at the seams with escalating home and bank foreclosures, the lowest education level in the industrialized world, infant immortality rates higher and life expectancy projections lower than some underdeveloped nations, and ongoing government bailouts for corporations and financial institutions. All the while, its citizens are forced to travel to Canada and Cuba in order to receive affordable health care, and we are presently witnessing the decay of society in real time, and the crumbling of another Empire that proves to have bitten off more than it can stuff in its mouth as the national debt surpasses an unfathomable nine trillion dollars.
So, once again, to properly address the question of having lost track of moral principles, it has thus been demonstrated that the United States has seldom even been on the path of moral principles, let alone lost its way. As time continues to pass, the nation appears to be distancing itself even further from such a trajectory that would be considered virtuous.
While history may not exactly repeat itself, immorality seems to be a perpetually malignant disposition that is beginning to reveal its unavoidable effects within the hollow halls of U.S. society. Precisely where this track of immoral behavior eventually leads is speculative and uncertain at this juncture. However, the signs on the horizon fail to reveal any hint of optimism or positive change as the only welcoming committee left standing with any sense of virtue is Lady Liberty, whose weary arm struggles to keep her flickering torch elevated above the muck of immorality below and beyond.
