When we think of music, we usually think about the different types of it and the one that best suits us. Another word for this would be genre, which is used as a method of categorizing music in this case. There are all kinds of genres of music, to name some of the most popular I would have to say that hip hop, rap, rock, jazz, pop, classical, metal, country and indie would be the most recognizable ones of today. But this is just one way of looking at it, there are all different points of views about what music really is.
A musician's point of view would be similar to the previous one, the only difference being the matter of understanding music in a much deeper level. There are many more aspects to look at then just simply choosing the type that you would want to listen to. For instance you must have at least some sort of understanding of notes and composition. In my opinion anyone can be taught how to play and write music on an instrument, but for the ones who are born with a natural talent for it, it will take much less time and effort to achieve the same results.
Another way of looking at music would be to look at it as an art form which in my opinion would defiantly have to be the most interesting. With all the different aspects that come together to create music , it is easy to say that it is one of the most satisfying and exciting forms of art. Thinking about all the ways of making music such as all the possibilities of laying out the notes and rhythm, the lyrics and their meaning, the beat and the overall message that the song projects in order for you to either relate to it or at least enjoy the way it sounds, amazes me.
Music can easily have a huge impact in someone's life, and I'm almost positive that everyone has at least one story of something that has happened in their life that deals with music, something like a song bringing back memories of your childhood or maybe hearing a song you and a loved one deemed "your song" many years before hearing it again and remembering all these things that a simple song brought back to you.
As a musician myself, the question "what is music?" is incredibly hard to answer and would have to be looked at in every possible way. Music is more something that doesn't need a definition, but needs to be explored and examined by as many people as possible for the true meaning and impact of it to fully be revealed.
