Closer To The Door
You come home from work each evening
as though it's got to be
But you look as if you find us all a bore
And you think that you deceive us
With each vague excuse to leave us
And I know I'm getting closer to the door
I can't tell you now what happened
I can't say when things went wrong
We once lived just for each other, nothing more
But now you've built your own world
And there's no place there for me
And I know I'm getting closer to the door
When did we become a burden
and begin to cramp your style
When did the purring in your heart become a roar
I see no reason now for kneeling
For you've killed that old, sweet feeling
And I know I'm getting closer to the door
You find fault with things I don't do
take for granted things I do
When my opinions aren't your own, then you get sore
And, though they try, the kids are not
What you want, but what you've got
With each step I'm getting closer to the door
If I was the lone one in it
I'd be gone in just a minute
But the children weigh so heavy on my heart
Though they see so little of you
I am sure that they still love you
They would be so hurt and scared if we should part
But I know in just a few years
They'll be grown and understand
That their mommy just can't take it anymore
I need to walk among the living
Think and feel, as well as giving
And I know I'm getting closer to the door
And some day I'll walk on through it
Won't turn back, I'll simply do it
Yes, I know I'm getting closer to the door
