My first visit to the Great Smoky Mountains, as a young boy, is still indelibly imprinted in my mind. It was a grand adventure with my family during a summer vacation. The magic of that trip has brought me back my times, with my own family, to experience the physical and spiritual refreshing of the Appalachian Mountains.
There is no better time than the holiday season to visit this wonder of nature. Both nature and man put on quite a show during the winter months. The climate is mild during most of the winter, highs in the upper 50s and lows at night dropping slightly below freezing. Snowfall in the lower elevations is generally not a problem, simply adding to the charm and wonder of an already breathtaking experience.
Everyone has their own list of favorite things to do when visiting the Great Smoky Mountains region. I'd like to share my short list of memory making things to do.
Start in nearby Pigeon Forge. Beginning in November, the town of Pigeon Forge rolls out the multicolored carpet known as Winterfest. Millions of lights come to life to celebrate the season. One of the best ways to see all of the light displays is on the Trolley Tour starting at Patriot Park. The Trolley Tour happens each night, Monday through Friday. Also, be sure to catch the Singing Santa while you're in town for singalongs and photos.
During the day, take your time exploring the shops on Pigeon Forge Parkway and Bell Tower Square, the south's largest year round Christmas village. There are also many family oriented activities along the parkway, including go karts, miniature golf and at least 40 other activities that could keep you and your family entertained for weeks.
You will also find several great indoor entertainment venues, featuring music, food, comedy shows and more. Nationally known artists perform on a regular basis, so be sure to check upcoming schedules on the internet.
Pigeon Forge is a great home base and launching point for your excursions into Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Park Rangers do a great job of planning activities that the entire family will enjoy. From nature talks to short hikes in the brisk, clean air of the mountains, you and your family will cherish every moment. Be sure to stop at the Ranger Station to pick up a calendar of current events.
One of the highlights of every trip to the park is an afternoon drive through Cades Cove. The Loop Road through the Cove is incredible during this time of year. Stop to visit the old churches and pioneer village, built by the early settlers of the Appalachian region. Keep your eyes open for abundant wildlife. Drink in the awesome and majestic mountain scenery. Personally, this drive is at the top of my "must do" list in the Park.
It would take more than a lifetime to experience all that the Great Smoky Mountains has to offer. Why not start this holiday season? See you there.
