Algonquin Hotel
First opened to the public in 1902 the Algonquin hotel has since established itself as one of New York's most famous hotels. Historic Traveller magazine recently
voted the Algonquin as one of America's ten greatest historic hotels, a position achieved through no small effort on behalf of legendary manager and owner Frank Case (1927).
During his time, Case managed to attract many of America's most respected actors and writers. These included: Booth Tarkington, Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., John Barrymore and H.L. Mencken. In 1919 the hotel's notorious Round Table room
became the daily haunt for literary legends such as Robert Bently, Robert E.Sherwood, Dorothy Parker, George S.Kauffman, Heywood Broun and Edna Ferber. Nicknamed the Vicious Circle,' these daily lunch meetings quickly became a stage for exchanging the latest ideas, opinions and delivering often stinging attacks against other writers.
The Algonquin is also noted for being the first hotel to allow female guests. These
included: Gertrude Stein, Eudora Welty and Helen Hayes. The great American scribbler William Faulkner is also reputed to have drafted his 1950 Nobel Prize for literature acceptance speech whilst staying at the Algonquin. These days the hotel can boast hand-selected antique furniture, 142 luxurious rooms, 27 suites with complimentary internet access throughout.
