The sea thrashed as the lightening crashed, forking across the skies in an electric thunderstorm. Tidal surges swamped Galveston Island as the raging sea took hold of and destroyed a third of the once richest Texas City. The fateful night on September 8th 1900 could have been a blessing in disguise, as events afterwards later transformed Galveston into a top tourist attraction.
A seawall was built to stop any further devastation in 1902 but by this time, over six thousand innocent lives had been taken - claimed by the Ocean forever...
It is no wonder that Galveston Island is now popular among tourists looking for a chilling thrill on their vacation. The Island is now famed to home some of the most exciting supernatural activity in the world. During the 1500's, Galveston was home to Akokisa Indians who buried their dead right there on the Islands ground.
Why not treat your family to a spooktacular night in Galveston by taking them to Dash Beardsleys Ghost Tour of Galveston? Founded in 1999 by Beardsley, this is the Islands first haunted tour. Dare you walk the path of the headless railway ghost or step to the front line of the Civil War spirits?
Here is a top five list of the must see places on your trip to Galveston;
1. Galveston Bay - Can you spot the the Sailor? Ahoy Captain!
2. The Strand - Walk the 'ghostly' miles but look out for extra eyes watching you...
3. Ashton Villa Mansion - Watch out for the well known ghost of Bettie Brown accompanied by her army soldiers marching around!
4. The Hotel Galvez - You will quite literally be scared crapless if you dare to enter the ladies room in this hotel. With violently rattling cubicle doors, this is one hell of a hairy trip to the powder room...
5. The University of Texas Medical Branch - An old fisherman is said to hauntthis university building by showing his face in different places on the outside walls. A site sure to 'reel' you in and catch you 'hook, line and sinker'!
And now, a nice relaxing note to end our ghostly guide....
Imagine you are walking down the beautiful sandy beach at Galveston Bay in the milky late night twilight. Enjoying your walk, and hearing the waves slowly lap up onto the shore before lazily teeming away, you sigh slowly as you take in the wonderful view, then suddenly..what's that noise? A fitful weep? The crunch of pebbles beneath the feet? The chattering of animal teeth? A pitying moan?! You turn around slowly, heart beating, pulse racing faster...faster....as you turn and your eyes lock onto the stooping figure behind you, you utter a gasp....! Oh, it's only your poor husband trembling from the fear of walking the haunted Galveston bay! Be warned, this trip is not for the wimps!
