What you need to know when shopping for a treadmill

Whether your training for a marathon race, or merely enjoy long, brisk, walks; a good treadmill can help you walk or run your way to overall fitness. A quality treadmill has many healthful benefits. It is an excellent tool for burning calories and shedding weight, and it is also a great way to increase your aerobic capacity, and physical endurance.

There are a wide variety of treadmills to choose from. There are some that offer many extras like cardiac monitors, speed controls, and electric fans to keep you cool. Some treadmills are non-motorized, while others are electric with motors of varying capacity. The non-motorized models are less expensive, but straining against the belt is hard on your body and can stress the joints.

Another important factor in your purchase should be to inquire about assembly. Some treadmills come partially assembled and others may have to be assembled in your home. Be sure to ask for help with assembly, if you feel you need it.

The type of treadmill you choose should also reflect how you intend to use it. Are you training for distance running, jogging, or just walking? A good treadmill is not cheap and the difference in use can cost thousands. A fine, quality treadmill to accommodate running and walking, will cost about a $1000 with high end models in excess of the $3000 range. Some of the more expensive models can even be folded for safe, convenient, use in homes with limited space.

Before buying a treadmill set a realistic budget and exercise plan. If your interested in distance running, look for models with a long deck, a strong motor, and superior construction. This will help it endure the long hours of physical abuse. Those interested in walking or light exercise, should seek treadmills with a shorter deck, smaller motor, and basic features geared more for moderate use.

When you run on a treadmill, the impact is 2.5 times your body weight. The impact from walking is considerably less. If your a large person over 250 pounds, be sure to find a model suitable to sustain your weight and impact. If your a tall person over six foot, you need a treadmill with a longer walking surface to support your stride.

Finally, be sure to select a treadmill with a reasonable warranty to insure your purchase. A warranty that covers the motor for 5 years and parts and service for at least 2 years, is generally the standard.

A good treadmill can help you attain an optimum level of physical fitness and endurance.
Whether you walk or run your way to fitness; a treadmill can help you add an abundance of heart healthy years to your life.
