Wanting to plan a trip to an island paradise? Go to Jamaica!
Jamaica, an island in the Caribbean, is a popular vacation destination for lovebirds, families, and adventurers looking for fun in the sun, a happening nightlife, and loads of culture.
Any savvy traveler should know before they take off on an international vacation about transportation to and around their destination to ensure their trip is enjoyable, memorable, and safe.
Here is a helpful guide to ensure your vacation to Jamaica doesn't wind up with a lot of potholes and detours.
Remember, this is international travel no matter where you fly from so don't forget your passport!
The island of Jamaica has two international airports and most international carriers will fly into either one. Norman Manley International Airport is on the eastern coast of the island in the capital city of Kingston. This is a good airport to fly into if staying in Port Antonio, Ocho Rios or heading down to the South Coast.
The Donald Sangster International Airport is in the resort city of Montego Bay is on the west coast of the island. If staying in Negril, flying into this airport is a good option.
ONCE YOU ARRIVE
After you get through customs (be prepared for long lines) you are anxious to begin your vacation so it is recommended that you book your travel from the airport before you arrive in Jamaica.
A tip for families, try to catch customs official who is managing the lines. They will usually direct a family with small children to a short line or one that is for returning Jamaicans, this can save you tons of time!
A lot of people leave the airport in small busses or taxi cabs but if you are staying at a large resort, resort provided transportation is usually an option.
You can opt for a rental car but driving in Jamaica can be a chore. Especially leaving the airport since traffic is always busy.
TRANSPORTATION AROUND JAMAICA
Public buses are inexpensive but crowded so consider taking a route taxi (red plates) which are fairly inexpensive. Be aware that the driver will pick up other passengers. You can also hire a private taxi for about $15 per hour.
If you choose to rent a car be aware that in Jamaica steering wheels are on the right but driving is on the left side of the road. In rural areas be prepared to yield to animals and you might have to stop for chatting locals. Also, don't be offended if you get honked at, that's the Caribbean way of saying hello.
SAFETY/AREAS TO AVOID
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in open markets where pick pocketing is considered common. Generally, the resort cities are safe, but if visiting Kingston be especially wary at night in certain neighborhoods (or avoid altogether).
Common courtesy goes a long way here and please, do not take pictures of the Rastafarians without their permission.
ROAD CONDITIONS
In the larger cities, roadways are generally in good condition but be prepared for bumps and other nuisances in the rural areas. The roads are also narrow and windy in these areas and some are one way so if driving be aware of oncoming traffic.
TRAVEL TIMES BETWEEN CITIES
Travel between cities in Jamaica can take hours. Generally it takes 1.5 to 2 hours to reach Ocho Rios, Mandeville (South Coast), or Port Antonio from Kingston. It is also about an hour and a half drive from Montego Bay to Negril. Drive time from Montego Bay (northwest) to Kingston (southeast) is generally 3.5 to 4 hours.
