What you need to know when shopping for exercise bands

Resistance bands are the most versatile and convenient type of exercise equipment available. You can work everything from your biceps to your behind, and you can pack them in an overnight bag and work out wherever you go.

When shopping for resistance bands, check their length. You should choose bands within eight inches of your height, so that they are long enough to use for all of your exercises. If you can't find quite the right size, choose a longer set. You can always hold the bands further down, but you can't make shorter bands any longer.

You select exercise bands by their resistance level. Many brands come in sets of color-coded bands so that you can distinguish between them. Different tensions work for various exercises; light resistance work to tone your upper body, for instance, and a heavy-weight resistance band offers more tension for squats.

Deciding which exercise bands to use for each move requires some experimentation. Start with lighter bands, doing two sets of fifteen repetitions. If the moves are too easy, move up to a heavier resistance band during your next workout. If you can't complete the sets, try a lighter band next time.

Be sure that you do not use any oils when exercising with resistance bands, as oil will degrade the rubber or latex. You can find latex-free bands if you are allergic. Before you use your exercise band, check it for and nicks or tears. A damaged band might break under strain and could injure you.

The compact size of a resistance band system makes it the perfect exercise equipment for your home. You can store the set, including detachable handles, in a drawer or closet, taking them out only when you want to work out. You don't have to dedicate an entire room to clunky machines in order to strengthen and tone your entire body.
