Famous people from Maine

by Cicely Richard

The New England state of Maine borders the Atlantic Ocean and Canada and is known for its beautiful landscape. This scenery includes a rocky coastline, magnificent mountains and dense forest. This natural beauty, however, is not Maine's most famous commodity. Who hasn't heard of Maine lobster and clams? There are a number of famous people from Maine, born in the midst of this symbol of New England life.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin," was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, but she adopted Maine as her home when she married Calvin Ellis Stowe. With the publication of her controversial novel, she gains the attention for her expose of the plight of the American Slave. Her book serves as one of the catalysts that lead to the eruption of the Civil War. Her book has continued to raise questions concerning authenticity, the presentation of the true nature of slavery, and most notably the stereotypes of black that are presented in the novel. Despite the controversy that has surrounded her work, its longevity is proof her impact on literature and society.

Before it became trendy to care for the needs of people with mental disabilities, Dorothy Dix, born in Hampden, Maine, works for the humane treatment on the insane poor in the 19th century. She lobbies the Congress for proper care of these individuals who could not care for themselves. Dix doesn't start out as a reformer. As a matter of fact, she spends a number of years trying to find her place, working as a teacher, governess and writer. She suffers a breakdown and travels to England to find a cure. Noticing the flaws in the British social welfare system, she returned to the United States and begins a nationwide investigation of the condition of mental health. Eventually her efforts lead to a bill that makes state responsible for the upkeep of mental health programs in the country.

Known to fans of "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. McDreamy, Patrick Dempsey is currently one of Maine's most popular New Englanders. Born in Lewiston, Maine, the actor has attained success as Dr. Derek Shepherd on the medical drama. Dempsey, though, has had a long acting career. In the 80s, he was known for many of his teen roles, such as the teen comedy "Can't Buy Me Love" with Amanda Peterson. Unlike a lot of teen actors, he transforms himself to a viable adult actor. In the 90s, he plays in a number of small roles. The resurgence of his career begins at the turn of the century, with a recurring guest role on "Will and Grace." He also appears in a number of movies, including "Sweet Home Alabama" with Reese Witherspoon. However, the character that has defined him is his current television role on "Grey's Anatomy."

These are just a few people from Maine.
