What you need to know when shopping for exercise balls

Exercise balls have become a very popular piece of equipment for many athletes, personal trainers and physical therapists. Also referred to as gym balls or stability balls, they are versatile, offer a wide range of uses, and can be used successfully by both novices and experienced athletes.

A gym ball is not the same as a traditional medicine ball. Medicine balls are filled with sand and designed for weight training. A stability ball is filled with air and is designed to improve strength, flexibility and balance. They are available in a variety of sizes. The size of the ball should be matched to the size of the body and should allow the user to sit on top of the ball keeping their hips and knees at a 90 degree angle to the floor. Basic size guidelines are:

Size Height
55 cm 4'11" 5'3"
65 cm 5'4" 5'10"
75 cm 5'11" and above
*Heavier consumers may want to purchase a slightly larger ball than their height dictates.

Before buying a ball, make sure it is strong and resistant to bursting or puncturing. Consider additional features like bumpy surfaces that are designed improve blood flow. Balls can also vary in shape from round to peanut-shaped, or come with peg feet to improve ball stability, making them easier to use.

Using an exercise ball requires some practice, but is a perfect addition to any exercise routine or home gym. These balls offer a fun, low impact way to improve overall body conditioning.
