What you need to know when shopping for exercise bands

Exercise bands, sometimes also called resistance, stretch, flex or workout bands, are useful tools for both strength and stretching exercises. The two main kinds are bands resembling large, flat ribbons (used for flexibility and Pilates training) and bands made of tubing (used mainly for strength training exercises).

There are several things to consider when selecting which resistance bands to buy.

First, pick the correct level of exercise band for your needs. Resistance bands are color-coded according to tension level - for example, light, medium, heavy, and very heavy. Since there is not an industry-wide coding standard, always check the package for an explanation of the color coding of the band you are considering. It is also a good idea to buy several different bands at the same time, preferably at least three - light, medium and heavy - for a variety of workouts.

Next, make sure that the band is long enough for you to use comfortably. You can always choke up on the band to shorten it, but you cannot lengthen a too-short band. A resistance band will not work properly for you if it doesn't allow you the full range of motion.

Third, you always want to buy comfortable, easy to use bands. Choose bands with easy to change padded handles. Try stretching the band to make sure it feels comfortable in your hand.

Most importantly, keep it simple. If you're just starting out, stick with a basic resistance band with handles. Once you're comfortable with this, you can select from a variety of resistance bands - figure 8's, double bands, circular bands, etc. - to make your workout more interesting and strenuous.

Also, keep in mind that you can always buy additional accessories to use with your bands. A door or rail attachment can secure the resistance band for several different exercises. You can buy ankle cuffs, an assist strap (used as a hand/foot/ankle strap), adjustable handles, and other accessories to vary your workouts.

Finally, consider buying a resistance band video or book to help you learn how to use the bands correctly. This will ensure that you enjoy a good, and safe, workout.
