What you need to know when shopping for punching bags

When shopping for a punching bag, a consumer must first think about what kind of exercise that is going to be most helpful for the users' goal. There are two primary types of punching bags; speed bags which are mainly used for cardiovascular exercises and heavy bags which help a person to attain more power. Taking a closer look at these two types of punching bags will help you better understand the differences.

If you are looking for a low impact exercise then I would highly recommend a speed bag over the purchase of a heavy bag. The speed bag is a fun way of getting a good cardiovascular workout without the impact of hitting a heavier, more resistant bag. Another advantage of a speed bag is space saving. The speed bag can be placed anywhere in the home or the gym and is typically set up so that removal and storage is possible. One disadvantage of the speed bag is that it takes some practice to get a good rhythm. Also, purchasing a pair of boxing/sparring gloves with your bag will help protect your fists.
On the other hand, if you are looking to build muscle, a heavy bag is for you. There are numerous types of heavy bags for different sports and activities. Assuming this heavy bag is just for punching and/or kicking, I would recommend a hanging bag. I would also recommend buying a leather heavy bag. Leather is more durable and even though it costs a little more, it is always a pain to keep trying to fix a cheaper model when trying to work out. Space is a concern when buying a heavy bag. The options are hanging the bag from the ceiling, buying a hanging bag stand, or a freestanding bag.
My suggestion is hanging a bag from the ceiling. The stand tends to restrict movement, especially for kicking and the freestanding bag has a frustrating bottom which may get in the way when close quarter sparring practice. Of course, not all homes are built to withstand a bag hung from the ceiling, in which case the other two options are viable. Remember, a heavy bag is not a low impact exercise machine and that a pair of gloves are a necessary accessory.
As you can see there are positives and negatives associated with each bag. Finding which bag means knowing which bag will work best for what you have in mind. Either which way I bet you'll have fun, but remember to be safe and strike hard.
