Jamaica's famous beaches

Considering Jamaica is an island (which means it's surrounded by water) the opportunities for travelers to spend a great deal of time on various beaches are seemingly endless.

A mellow place to sunbathe, surf, or partake in water sports the beaches in Jamaica definitely have something to offer.

Broken down by their coastal location (north, south, east and west) here are some of the best beaches in Jamaica.

NORTH COAST (Montego Bay, Ocho Rios)

Turtle Beach/Mallard Beach- Probably the most popular beaches in Jamaica, period, both of these beaches are located in Ocho Rios and are family friendly because of so many nearby amenities. Both are great beaches for water sports such as scuba diving, jet skiing, or kayaking and you can book a room at a nearby hotel and enjoy these beaches for the duration of your stay. Sun beds and umbrellas are also available to rent for the vacationer who is looking to relax.

James Bond Beach- With the backdrop of this beach being the famed Golden Eye Hotel (Ian Fleming, author of James Bond novels was once a resident) this famous beach is absolutely breathtaking and was the set for the Bond film "Dr. No." Situated on a private peninsula, there is a fee for the use of the beach but there is a restaurant, water sports, and glass-bottomed boats available for hire.

EAST COAST (Kingston, Port Antonio)

Lime Cay- An unknown gem of Kingston, this uninhabited island is a favorite for locals and yachtsmen. Easy to get there by hiring a boat (there is no formal transportation available) the beaches are great for picnicking, sun bathing, and snorkeling. No amenities are available here so come prepared. A fabulous way to experience being on a "desert" island!

WEST COAST (Negril and Montego Bay)

Seven Mile Beach- Possibly the most famous beach in Jamaica, this literal seven mile stretch of sand is located in Negril and is clothing optional so think twice about bringing the kids. A former haven for hippies, the beach is now a hub for tourists. Resorts, restaurants, nightclubs, and shops line the shoreline so if you need anything, chances are you will be able to find it fast. And if you can't, a local will be more than willing to help.

Doctor's Cave- For the clothing conscious family, Doctor's Cave is a great option. A very popular beach near Montego Bay, expect to find it crawling with kids and their parents during peak season. Great for snorkeling or just to take a dip in the ocean, there is a fee to enter the beach, sun beds, umbrellas, and changing facilities are available, and there are plenty of restaurants and vendors nearby.

SOUTH COAST (Mandeville)

Treasure Beach- An incredibly different experience from the north and west coasts, but still with plenty of amenities nearby, Treasure Beach, is located on the south coast of Jamaica and is a great change of pace from the other busy beaches normally visited. Black sand, lots of sun, and plenty of seashells to collect make Treasure Beach a real well treasure!

No matter what coast you're staying on, you are sure to find a great beach to help make your stay in Jamaica that tropical vacation you were aiming for!
