Located on the southeast coast and the largest English speaking city in the Caribbean, Kingston, the capital city of Jamaica, is the cradle of Jamaican culture.

Filled with history and gorgeous botanical gardens, Kingston is often an overlooked vacationing spot in Jamaica because of its poor reputation for crime.

However, a Jamaican vacationer would be remiss to bypass this city which represents the true nature of Jamaican life and culture.

Founded in the 17th century as a refuge from the earthquake that rocked Jamaica in 1692, Kingston, ironically, was plagued soon thereafter by its own disasters including a massive hurricane in 1784, two fires (1843 and 1862) and a devastating earthquake in 1907.

The site of the seventh largest natural harbor in the world, Kingston's port area is a hub of activity and is partially responsible for the city's poor reputation due to the area's known activities that involve crime and corruption.

Obviously a tenacious city, travelers visiting Kingston can expect to see a city divided. The neighborhoods are clearly divided with the wealthier areas being to the north and the ghettos centered around downtown there has been a major movement as of late, to bring tourism back to Kingston and renovations and clean up of problem areas are becoming more common.

Therefore travelers in Kingston can expect to have a great time at these fabulous attractions:

Bob Marley Museum- the home of the ubber famous reggae artist, you can't go to Kingston and not visit. More than just a museum, this attraction invites visitors to learn about Bob from a local Rastafarian in a very intimate setting. Emotional and memorable for fans.

Walkerswood Epicurean Tour- for anyone who loves food, check out this new culinary experience and taste the foods of Jamaica! Entertaining staff, great music, a caf, and of course great food, take the time to experience this unique spot.

Devon House- built by Jamaica's first black millionaire George Stiebel, this 127 year old, 11 acre property is a stark contrast from the Kingston outside its gates. Tour the mansion itself, its lush lawns and gardens, taste the iScream ice cream (not to be missed!), or peruse one of the many shops located here.

Hollywell Recreation Area- Scattered between the ridges of the Blue Mountain Range, this park offers visitors breathtaking views and camping, away from the metropolitan area of Kingston. Go hiking on the trails that lead you through Jamaica's beautiful rain forests and mountains. A great place for the outdoor enthusiast.

National Gallery of Jamaica- Located on Kingston Harbour, in the Kingston Mall this is the perfect place for the art junkie. Featuring art from not only Jamaican artists like Cecil Baugh and Carl Abrahams, the gallery also includes traveling exhibits as well as international artists.

Even though Kingston is not the north shore "resort paradise" that most Jamaican vacationers are accustomed to, the city's attractions do offer visitors more than a sun tan.

Take advantage of experiencing the history and culture of the island in Jamaica's capital city- Kingston!
