Where writers find inspiration

My Inspiration Is Like Living Fireworks Sparked By The Experiences Of People Around Me

One of the most beautiful fireworks displays I have ever seen sparkled over New York City, and reflected on the calm surface of the waters that surround the Statue of Liberty. Somehow this seems to define the explosion that takes place in my heart as I am touched by the life experiences of my fellow man. Just as fireworks are designed to produce beautiful images once they explode, my heart is designed to explode into images to be painted with words for the world to see.

When I was a little boy, about nine years old, something awesome happened within my heart. I did not understand it then, but as I look back I can clearly see that God had redesigned my little heart to see deeply into the experiences of my friends and the people around me. From then on I began to see events that took place around me with a fresh vision. Somehow I could see hope in a hopeless situation. In the midst of pain I could see peace and healing. In the eyes of an angry child I could see love. This hope, peace, healing and love began to explode into a message for these hopeless, hurting and angry people around me. These become stories that will one day come back and touch other lives. Now as I find myself ministering to the young people in my church, I am often inspired to write a story, a lesson, or a devotional that will one day touch the lives of others. The experience of one of our youth will often become an illustration for a scripture in an upcoming Sunday school lesson. The success of a friend or neighbor, or church member, after going through some tough times, will no doubt become a story of hope that finds it's way onto the pages of a letter or the words of a speech. Let me share about just one person who has inspired me.

My little brother in a mentoring program is just such an inspiration. Hit by a car at age seven, he was not expected to live. If he lived it would not be a normal life. While he was on life support, I was given the status of "Designated Grandfather" so I could see him anytime I wanted to. Because of my love for him, I could not ask God for His will do be done because I was afraid God's will was that my little brother would not live. I wanted him to have a second chance. I went to see him every day. While he was on life support I was told that I could not talk to him because I caused his brain to swell. That was because he recognized my voice and it was connected to fun and laughter,
