A heart rate monitor is a device used to measure the frequency of a persons heart rate in real time. Heart rate monitors are usually made up of two elements a chest strap transmitter and a wrist receiver unit that displays and records data. Also available are strapless monitors (also known as the heart rate monitor watch) but these usually lack some of the functions of the original design. Features usually include average heart rate over a period of exercise, specific heart rate zones and detailed logging that can be uploaded to a computer.
Heart rate monitors take a pulse reading by picking up tiny electrical signals given off by each heartbeat. Sensitive electrodes (fitted to a chest strap or in the case of strapless monitors the watch face)detect these signals.
Heart rate monitors are a useful part of an exercise program as they are specific to each person, allowing them to train at the right level. They provide precise information about how hard your body is working and ensures your training is effective and efficient. Any improvement is also monitored which helps you track your progress and measure how your body has adapted to the exercise. This also prevents over training, which is important to your health.
A popular and effective leader in the market is the Polar Heart Rate Monitor. Polar heart rate monitors help you asses your body at every stage of your exercise program.
