Commentary: George W. Bush and US torture

9/11/01. This is a date which none of us who were old enough to have witnessed the events which unfolded on that day will ever forget. I remember driving to work that morning, and hearing a report on the radio that a small craft had run into one of the World Trade Center Towers. By the time I arrived at my office, a second commercial airliner had struck the other Trade Center Tower, and the entire world knew that the United States was under attack, and that war had been declared against our country. As we were all glued to the images on the television, it was still unbelievable to comprehend that an attack of this magnitude was happening on our soil in the year 2001.

We watched in horror as people ran for their lives when the Towers collapsed due to the ensuing fire which weakened the steel structure, and even more horrifying to watch were the scenes of people who chose to jump to their death from the Twin Towers rather than to be burned alive. I wonder how many people would consider that to be torture which was perpetrated against the poor innocent souls who had to make that choice?

We were to later learn that the attacks were made against our country by the most vile group of killers which we have had to face since Hitler committed genocide against humanity. Back in the forties, the leaders of the free world banned together and defeated the Nazi's and fascism. The Taliban does not believe in the freedoms which we enjoy in this country. The Taliban would like death and destruction to be brought upon the United States and other free country's. They do not believe in human rights, they believe that woman are little more than slaves to men, and aren't allowed within the Taliban culture to even show their faces in public. Women aren't allowed an education, or to participate in life in a way which most of us would consider to be normal. Is this torture? The Taliban beheads those that oppose their warped perception of reality. Is that torture?

Fundamentalist Fascist Islamists such as the Taliban must be defeated, as we had to defeat the Nazi's, and we have to use any method that it takes to get the job done. Those who choose to attack George W. Bush for doing what has to be done, those who question some of the methods which have to be employed by our military to accomplish the mission of securing our freedoms and preventing another attack on our soil are not taking the threat against our freedoms and way of life seriously. We must defeat this evil, and those who want to stand in the way of those who want to defend us are naive and misguided by idealistic beliefs. The only way to defeat an enemy willing to use force to achieve their goal of destroying us is to meet them with greater force. Those who don't have the stomach for the job should stay out of the way and let our military do what is necessary to preserve what we have sacrificed so much for. George W. Bush being accused of torture? What a joke.
