What it means to be created in God's image

by Josiah King

Created on: August 20, 2008

I wish to start this article by saying that I don't know it all or claim to have a "lock on the truth". All this is is simply my views, interpretations, and beliefs on the subject. Nothing more, nothing less. That being said, here we go.

To be created in God's image has been a topic many have pondered about. What did God mean when he said we were created in his image? Was it the reflection of the Holy Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Going only by these, I would say no. Granted one can be a father, and a son, but who can be the Holy Spirit? Now, some would say that it is the fact that we were made a three-part being like the Godhead. We have a body, a soul, and a spirit. To that I would say I agree, mostly. I obviously agree that all of mankind has a body, that's a given. And the concept of soul, I would say sure, though, I am not exactly sure what definition of the soul is correct. But, as for the spirit part, I have a different view to offer you.

Consider that God, back in the beginning of man, said that He breathed into Adam and Adam received life.(I am not going verbatim here, just off the top of my head.)The word, if I recall correctly for breathed was 'ruach', which translates as breath, but also as spirit. So, if the Bible says that Adam received life by God breathing upon him, and we know that it can also translate as spirit, then would it not make sense to say that God placed his spirit within Adam. And isn't God's spirit the very essence of life? Therefore, I would say that every human being does not have an individual spirit, but all partake in the same spirit which is God, which is life.

But, wait, perhaps the meaning of being made in the image of God is more than just this or is perhaps something other than this. Follow with me on this, if you will. What if the image of God expressed in man are things like a sovereign will, the capacity to love, and dominion.

God has a sovereign will, which means to me that He has the ability to decide to do something or say something if ever and when ever He so chooses without the approval of anyone else. Likewise, I would argue that man has been given a sovereign will. Don't believe me? Let's say you decide to go running naked across a football field; do you 'have to' get someone's approval or can you, as Nike says, just do it? Well, of course you can do it! Now, I am not saying there aren't consequences to your decisions, but that doesn't negate the fact that you can choose to do or say anything whenever
