Seven cats and two dogs. Sounds like the famous "cat lady" doesn't it? Actually they all belonged to us. That is the company I grew up with. I love both dogs and cats, but only the latter are my favorite. I really think it's genetic in my family. My mom, grandfather and uncle all prefer cats to dogs. So does my husband and kid.
I used to have some very distant relatives who hated cats but loved dogs. I'm still trying to figure out this exceptional phenomenon. My relatives said they hated the cat's fur. Which did not make any sense. Dogs are furry too. I probably won't ever figure this one out.
As I said before, we love cats. It's hard to resist their appeal. My mom used to say that they are sophisticated animals, and I agree. They are also very independent and just a tad snobby.
Living with cats for so long I noticed something very interesting. A cat loves to be cuddled but there is a trick to it. When I tried to make a cat sit on my lap it ran away. I was crushed. So the next time I just ignored him. Sure enough, he was in my lap, purring, in two minutes.
Cats love the comforts of life. Warmth, good even gourmet foods, lots of attention. DO NOT ignore a cat for too long. It will actually urinate in front of the door to get attention. They demand your respect, and have great pride.
Another thing I love is that you can play with them, and they are very funny. I have seen cats do hillarious and amazing things. I used to take a ball tie a string around it. The cats would chase it all over the house with great leaps and bounds. They would ofetn crash into something. The amazing thing is that they would jump right back into the game.
My mom had a great part in making us cat persons. She would tell us how the cats think we are weird creatures. She loved to cuddle with a book and a cat, on snowy winter evenings. Those memories will stick with me forever. After we got married we got a cat. He was half calico. I don't know what the other half was. I decided to name him Jedi, because he had a great ability to make us feel guilty. That cat was very amazing. He used to love climbing trees wich is average for any cat.
Jedi was different. His favorite sport was to jump from branch to branch as a monkey would. We have never seen anything like it.
Dogs on the other hand are very different. They are more mellow and down to earth. They are lovable animals. They protect you. I love them too. However they do not have as much character as cats. Which I belive is why cats appeal to us so very much.
