So you have decided that New Zealand is your next vacation destination. If you are the adventurous independent type, it is likely that you will want nothing to do with tour operators and already be planning the trip yourself. If you have decided that a self drive tour is your preferred option, just take a minute or two to establish a few things;
1) How long have you got to explore the country?
2) How much do you want to see of the country?
3) How many people will be taking doing the driving?
4) Are there specific destinations or sites that are on a must do list'?
5) What time of year are you planning to go?
Answer these questions and you will have a far better idea of whether your self drive tour is going to be a whistle stop tour of both islands in 10 days (and yes it can be done) or whether you are going to pick a handful of places to see and savour each location and relax whilst touring this country. Ensure that all members of the travel party are in agreement before commencing the planning further!
Having mentioned tour operators in the opening paragraph, it is worth making mention here that there are numerous operators who will plan a route and itinerary for you, book accommodation and recommend sights to see within New Zealand. If you are not of the type to trawl the internet or explore every accommodation option to ensure your dream holiday, then maybe a self drive tour planned by a specialist may be a good option. I would like to stress however, that it is very easy to plan routes and find accommodation at any given destination with a little time, and you will save yourself money as well.
Self driving in New Zealand is a pleasure. Travelling from the UK you will find that you drive on the same side of the road, however those from the US or other left hand drive car users may find a short adjustment period is necessary. The majority of the rules of the world are simple and no different from your home country's driving rules. However there are a couple of quirks including the give way rule at intersections. It pays to be informed, so check out www.ltsa.govt.nz/overseasdrivers/driving-in-nz.html for a brief resume of the road rules.
On arrival in New Zealand after a long flight you will be tired. Add to that a vast time change and it is likely that you will be exhausted. If possible do not head out onto your road trip immediately. Take a day at least to explore your arrival destination and recover from the jet lag. The remainder of your trip will be improved vastly
