What you need to know when shopping for exercise bands

Exercise bands, also known as resistance bands or stretch tubes, are a great inexpensive tool to use in your fitness routine. They are compact and easy to use, and they can be packed into a briefcase or suitcase for a quick workout on the road. These bands can be combined with fitness balls, shoulder sticks, and over-the-door attachments to get a full-body workout that doesn't get boring.

A resistance band is wider and more durable than tubing. These bands are color-coded for different resistance levels. As the muscles get stronger, the user moves up to thicker bands offering more resistance. Progressive resistance exercise builds strength, endurance and flexibility, and can be performed safely by adults of all ages.

Some exercise bands look like oversized rubber bands; others look more like rubber tubing. The rubber exercise bands are used to target smaller muscle groups, while the larger tubes and bands can be used to work the larger muscle groups, such as the legs.

There are many exercise bands on the market to choose from. Some of the tube bands have handles attached, and these handles make it easier to pull the band up and down while standing on the tubing. Other bands have ankle cuffs to secure the band while doing leg exercises.

Remember to be safe with your resistance bands, and examine them periodically discard any band or tubing that is showing signs of wear.
