The "newest" tourist destination on the west coast of Jamaica, Negril was discovered in the 1700's by pirates and unlike the other cities in Jamaica has a very sparse history.
However, with the influx of "flower children" from the United States in the 1960's and 1970's Negril has gained popularity partially because of its famous "Seven Mile Beach" which is literally seven miles of white sandy beach and any beach bum's heaven.
But it wasn't until a few decades ago that Negril truly prospered, adding a multitude of resorts to the area and becoming known as a leader in environmental conservationism.
Even today, the tallest building cannot be higher than the tallest palm tree.
Negril's attractions reflect its rural location. It's a fabulous place for lovebirds and honeymooners but can accommodate any tropical vacationer.
If going to Negril, keep in mind that just because you're vacationing in a "lesser known," "less-inhabited" area of Jamaica doesn't mean you can't have a good time.
Don't miss these fun-filled destinations if your Jamaican vacation is centered in Negril.
Negril Lighthouse- Since you have been educated that there is little history surrounding Negril, don't miss out on this often overlooked historical site. Built in 1894, the Negril Lighthouse offers visitors a spectacular view of the west coast and emits a mysterious aura complete with leftover cannons still sitting there. Even though the lighthouse is virtually left alone, it is still in working condition and its light can be seen from the Seven Mile Beach.
Kool Runnings Water Park- Even if you are in Negril for your honeymoon, who doesn't love a great water park? Reminiscent of water parks in the United States, Kool Runnings is a favorite of locals and boasts 10 water slides, a lazy river, and the much coveted "Kid's Area" if you do happen to be traveling with little ones. Uncommon for "theme parks," Kool Runnings also offers fabulous food for its patrons.
Negril Cliffs- Famous for being the backdrop for James Bond's film "Thunderball" the Negril Cliffs are located on the west end of Negril and is a great place to have a romantic picnic and take in the magnificent sunsets. But if you are feeling adventurous, the Negril Cliffs are also popular for what else? Cliff diving!
Peter Tosh Monument- Any reggae fan (or even semi-fan) that is familiar with Bob Marley is familiar with Peter Tosh. Technically located in the coastal town of Bluefields, the monument grounds are both small and simple, giving visitors a true taste of Jamaican history. See Peter Tosh's tomb and take a guided tour given by a true Rastafarian. A great destination off the beaten path, this is not to be missed!
Half-Moon Beach- Even though the Seven Mile Beach is what makes Negril famous, lovebirds and sun gods/goddesses alike will love this gorgeous, secluded beach. With easy access to a bar/restaurant within walking distance and hammocks and chairs set up for your enjoyment on the beach, travelers can spend a day (or days!) at this fabulous beach.
No matter how you spend your time in Jamaica, remember, while you are in Negril, you have the chance to slow down and enjoy this tropical paradise, so take advantage!
