How to eliminate body odor

by Jennifer Valicia

Created on: August 19, 2008

Though entirely natural and common to each and every one of us, body odor can be highly offensive and extremely embarrassing. Whether the result of physical exertion, hot weather, or anxiety and nervousness, the combination of sweat with the bacteria naturally present on our skin can have a powerfully unpleasant effect on our senses. Body odor is most commonly associated with the underarms, though can also be traced to the feet, groin, genitals, anus, hair, skin, ears, breath, and lingering home odors. For a comprehensive plan to eliminate body odor, consider the following:

*Bath at least once daily, more if the weather is hot or if you have been through physical exertion or mental stress. Bacteria on the skin is normal and healthy. Regular bathing helps keep bacterial levels at healthy levels. Take the time to thoroughly clean the underarms as well as ears, feet, and genital areas with plenty of soap and warm water. Hair should be washed every other day to allow for the retention of natural oil while avoiding buildup of sweat and odors. Dry your feet thoroughly, particularly between your toes where bacteria will thrive on the warm dampness.

*Take care of your feet. Wash thoroughly between each toe, and dry completely. Bacteria thrive on the warm dampness between the toes. Wear clean socks and rotate your shoes to give them a chance to dry and air out. Go barefoot when possible to give your feet a chance to breathe.

*Consistent use of antiperspirant or deoderant will significantly reduce foul underarm odors. It is best to apply products to clean, dry skin. For particularly sweaty individuals, clinical strength can be purchased and are applied at night before sleep. If that does not resolve the problem, seek advice from a physician or dermatologist who may be able to prescribe something stronger or suggest other medical options.

*Wash clothes frequently, as smells can linger, particularly in the underarm region. Be aware that sometimes a single washing won't completely remove body odor, and that you may need to do a prewash or increase the amount of detergent. Also wash your sheets regularly.

*Wear only clean underwear, socks, and stocking each and every day, no exceptions. The underarms aren't the only source of body odor. Natural fibers such as cotton and wool are generally more breathable than synthetics and best for undergarments.

*Practice good dental hygiene. This means brushing three times daily, flossing nightly, and regular dental checkups. Don't forget
