Ocho Rios, Jamaica, the cruise capital of Jamaica is also the perfect vacation spot for resort junkies and outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you plan on staying in one of its luxurious resorts or it happens to be a port on your cruise itinerary, Ocho Rios is a fabulous neighborhood of Jamaica.

Located on the north shore of the island, Columbus landed in nearby Discovery Bay in 1494. Ocho Rios literally translates from Spanish to mean: Eight Rivers. However, it could be a mistranslation from the Spanish phrase "Las Chorreras" (the waterfalls) because waterfalls are what make this area so visually spectacular.

In the last 25 years, Ocho Rios has evolved from a small fishing town to a major tourist destination. It is a fantastic mecca for outdoor markets, shops, restaurants, and nightclubs.

Ocho Rios is probably most famous for Dunn's River Falls, a 600 ft. waterfall that drops to the beach below. It is one of the most photographed and visited waterfalls in the world.

A great day excursion for hikers and nature enthusiasts, past visitors to the falls say to make sure you are physically able to endure the hike because of its "staircase" like nature. However, every visitor seems to also put this destination on their "must-see" list.

Luckily, the views from the top are breathtaking and a small craft market and concessions are almost like a reward for the trek up the falls.

As a bonus: If you don't want to spend your vacation exerting yourself hiking, you can still enjoy the unparalleled beauty of the Dunn River Falls. Take a dip in the waterfall's crystal-clear (and usually cold!) pools or splash around in the ocean at the base of the falls.

Located not too far from downtown Ocho Rios this destination is more than just lush tropical gardens that you can spend the day lazily perusing. It also features a museum that features pre-Colombian artifacts and is an easy walk to the Mahoe Falls. Visitors are also welcome to take a walk up the path to Ysassis Lookout Point where you can catch a great view of Ocho Rios, the coast, and cruise ships.
