Sexism in the workplace

by Ernest Smartt

Created on: August 19, 2008

It seems that there is no other direction to go on this issue but negative.
I cannot speak for any other country (and not for all Americans), and actually not even for all the workplace environments in America, but I can say that on the topic of sexism, America gets an "F". Of course, this is just one of many moral issues wherein this country is going to the dumps. I know that is a negative, but if you read on this particular topic, you will see that I am exactly right.

Dirty jokes spoken by men about sexual issues clearly boast of sexism. Dirty jokes by women also spit on gender issues. Advertisements do the same. Men are openly put down as less than people in TV ads. Women are seen as possessions in many of the TV shows. Men are laughed at and portrayed as stupid, and clueless with regard to family issues. Women are placed on a pedestal on this issue, but then they are portrayed as making men their slaves. Men have always put women on the slave block in the movies and all entertainment. Women are spoken of as if they are objects in songs, especially country songs. All of this comes back into the workplace in conversations and even in meetings and training programs. It is in the workplace where what is produced by the media gets glorified the most.

These things have been going on for a long time and there is no outcry about it. People just want to laugh, and it is painting a sad moral picture of America as seen by the rest of the world. We have built ourselves a reputation that may not ever be overcome. The workplace promotes this downfall because too often managers are not willing to put a stop to garbage talk because it is not politically correct to do so. Women are being abused and overlooked often because it is tradition. Men are being charged with sexual harassment more than ever before, not because it is wrong, but because it is so easy to make a charge. Sexual harassment charges are not about wanting to make the workplace better, it is about political correctness.

In years gone by, this problem has been about sexual issues and gender issues. If we will take a good look, we will see that now the media is dehumanizing humanity in general. Many times animals' intelligence is being compared to human intelligence, and man doesn't look so good. This sexism is getting worse, not because it is funny, or because it makes money, but because it is a moral issue and moral standards are falling rapidly. Morality has taken a hit in America, and it is being mutilated
