Kid's Room Decorating Ideas
When you're decorating a kid's room, you need to keep in mind the age and mentality of the child, and the budget restrictions that you have. You can decorate a child's room to look like a professional did it with just a bit of imagination and direction.
Here is an idea for decorating a boy's room in the age bracket of about two years to five or six years.
1. Choose a theme and be consistent all the way through. For example, the Disney Car theme is popular and with good reason. It's colourful, exciting and alive and children want to be where the action is.
2. Begin with the background colour. If you choose a light pastel you benefit several ways. A) if you decide to change your theme your colour will be neutral and be a great background for your next one and B) light colours in a child's room represents innocence and cleanliness and it's more inviting than a dark, foreboding colour.
3. You can paint all the walls one colour or you can give the walls character by turning them into a mural. For example, prime the walls and then put a wide piece of masking tape horizontally in the middle of each wall, and go all around the room with it, including the door and closet doors.
4. Paint the upper half a very light blue and the lower half a very pastel green. When it's dry, remove the masking tape. With a wide marker or a grey paint and paint brush, draw one inch lines leaving one inch spaces in between, all along the middle of the white strip. You have just created the road for the cars.
5. Pour some primer into a paint tray and with a large sponge, sponge on some white clouds sporadically across the upper blue wall. Make them different sizes and different consistencies of paint to make them look like clouds.
6. On the lower half, paint small and large trees, shrubs, flowers and even some buildings all around the green in the room, including the doors. Let some of the trees extend into the blue.
7. For the window coverings, you want to keep the room open and free, while still maintaining privacy and keeping it dark for sleeping. So, place white mini-blinds inside the frame of the window and put short, white fluffy looking sheers on top to help support the cloud effect.
8. Now, add the final touches. Purchase some colourful "Cars" decals and place them all along the roadway around the room. Make some straight, some facing up and some even backwards. Since they are reusable decals, the kids can even help.
9. Cover the bed(s) with "Cars" comforters and shams and put a huge "Cars"-shaped mat on the floor. You can even paint the dresser and night tables with colours from the "Cars" and add more colour and excitement to your theme.
10. For a final touch, you can add nightlights, switch plates and even ceiling lights in the "Cars" theme. If you have a ceiling fan, you can paint the vanes different "Cars" colours or make it all yellow to look like the sun.
For an added effect, you can paint the inside of the closet with the same idea as the room itself, which gives this adventurous appeal to the inside of the closet.
Now you will have a room that is not just a bedroom for your kids, but it becomes a room that they want to be in and play in. You have given their room a welcoming, homey appeal.
