Firstly, if you believe in God, the God of the Bible, the God of the Jews, Christians and Muslims, then you have no choice but to also believe in Satan. If God is the Creator of the universe and all it holds, He created Satan also.

You know the story: Lucifer was one of God's most beloved angels, but although he was created by God, Lucifer began to consider himself God's equal, and eventually God cast Lucifer out of Heaven into Hell, but also gave him dominion over the Earth.

Since then, Satan (formerly Lucifer) has engaged God in a tug of war for the hearts and minds, and, eventually, the souls, of humankind. Sometimes, Satan wins, usually in cahoots with humans who have taken the decision to do evil on his behalf.

I've heard people say they don't believe in God because if God existed, He wouldn't permit the suffering that exists in the world today. They say He wouldn't permit harm to come to little children. This point of view is ridiculous, and it is a victory for Satan. The suffering that exists in the world today is the product of Satan winning over the hearts and minds of some people, and getting them to do his bidding.

It's important to remember, hard as it may be to keep in mind all the time, that, if you believe in God and His Word, our existence in this world is temporary, and that if one loves God and keeps His commandments, the life that awaits in Heaven is unimaginably better than the best possible existence here on Earth.

The point has been made in other articles that God has given all humans free will. It is out of necessity that God allows us to make choices, either good or bad. God loves us freely, and He needs us to either love Him freely or reject Him freely, knowing that we will all fall short of his commandments from time to time, but also giving us the opportunity to redeem ourselves by asking His forgiveness and endeavoring not to sin from then on.

Satan occasionally achieves victories which, viewed in the context of this earthly life being our only existence, are heartbreaking, perhaps faith-challenging. But it is key to keep in mind that nothing occurs on Earth without God's assent, including any action Satan may instigate.

It's also important to accept that God has His reasons for allowing certain evil things to occur, and it is important to accept that it is not given to human beings to know or understand how or why God thinks as He does. The human intellect simply is not capable of, and would not be able to handle, knowing what God knows and seeing the universe through His eyes.

Satan's struggle against God is, for him, a no-win battle. Satan knows that, in God's good time, his dominion over the Earth will be taken from him. Until then, Satan does his best to get people to do evil on his behalf. It's Satan, and people who choose to do his dirty deeds for him, not God, who are responsible for all the bad things that have ever happened, are happening today, and will ever happen, here on Earth.
