Recumbent bikes are known for being a tricycle-like bicycle in design that offers a supportive and a comfortable ride. In today's home gym the recumbent bicycle indeed had its proper place for these exact reasons. It also can give the home gym owner an excellent workout because of its ability to work at amazing speeds and give the exerciser a challenge. Recumbent bicyclists hold world speed records for fastest human powered vehicles.
The recumbent exercise bike places the rider in a supine or semi-supine position. It gently supports the low back and the riders legs are extended fully in front of them. Steering can be above seat steering or under seat steering. There is a wide variety of types of recumbent bikes. The wheelbases can be either shorter or longer; the wheel sizes also can differ greatly. Some recumbent bicycles are available in an adjustable reclining position, with a range of semi-upright to a fully reclined position. The adjustability and increase of control due to the recumbent bicycle's low center of gravity make it a popular choice when shopping for exercise equipment. It is a safe choice. Braking and stopping abilities are must easier for this type of bicycle rather than a traditional two wheeled variety. This is similar to the Harley Davidson's hog motor cycle; the rider appears to sit back in ease and comfort and enjoys the ride thoroughly. A stationary recumbent exercise bike is similar in design to its original counterpart, but a source of resistance is added so the rider gets an additional bang for their exercising enjoyment.
The healthy position of the recumbent bike, with its low slung back is ideal for anyone with back or neck problems. It is also a great position to take in the morning news or other program overhead if this is how your home gym is set up. There is no added strain of bending your neck and straining it to look up as on a regular or conventional bicycle. Another healthy plus of a recumbent exercising bike is the fact that your heart and legs are working at just about the same height allowing for improved circulation of the blood.
When out buying a recumbent exercise bike, keep in mind what type of position you are ultimately looking for. Also keys points to consider are; wheel base length, whether short or long, wheel size and steering position. The adjustable back position is an important feature for long tours or traveling.
If a unique exercise experience sounds like the perfect way to jumpstart your exercise program, then the recumbent bicycle is worth taking the time and energy to check out.
