Mars is an interesting study because of its present position next to the Asteroid belt from which Mars probably acquired its two little satellite rocks. When I see a picture of Mars I am persuaded that the planet has had a severe face-lift that has completely changed the surface so severely that no one can now project what may have been there in the past. There are the usual craters but not so many as we may find elsewhere in the system. There are large canyons that some believe may have been eroded by water in the distant past. Many clever people have carefully studied the many pictures that have been taken of Mars and they tell us that the features on the Mars landscape are not only unusual but that they support the prospect that Mars has had lots of water in the past and a serious confrontation with another celestial object in the past. Logic can take us back in time to past events only so far. One series of catastrophes can completely hide earlier surface changes due to a previous event.

From a personal standpoint, with out proof of any kind, I have always been of the opinion that at least three planets in this Solar System had intelligent life on some occasions in the past. That is likely to be Venus, Earth and Mars. There has been much speculation about surface features on Mars. If you search the Web you find more than you most likely anticipated. You may recall the "Face" that at first looked quite convincing and later on, following more pictures of the area, faded away to less than recognizable. I bought the book written on the subject
