Eyebrow shaping: The art of threading

Created on: August 18, 2008

Threading is a short and easy method for eyebrow shaping. It averages 10 dollars a session and only takes 2-3 minutes when done by a professional. Threading seems like a relatively new method of removing unwanted facial hair. In reality, threading is an ancient Indian technique and has been around for centuries. It originated in India as the only method known for Indian woman to shape their eyebrows. Notably, threading is not only for eyebrows. Threading is also used for any unwanted facial hair including chin, upper lip, and along the hairline.

Threading is said to be more efficient and effective than tweezing because it removes a line of hairs rather than just one at a time. Every hair in the path of the removal thread will get pulled out. Including the thin light hairs that are difficult to see and even more difficult to remove when tweezing; resulting in a smooth hairless section of skin.
Threading is said to be less painful and more gentle than waxing. Waxing can be harsh on sensitive skin. If you have acne prone, sensitive skin threading is the better alternative to waxing. There is no hot wax or harsh chemical touching your skin, just the line of cotton thread.
It is difficult to explain threading without a visual, but there are 9 simple steps when learning to thread at home.

1) Use regular cotton sewing thread. The sort easily found in any sewing kit or sewing store.

2) Unwind and cut a thread about the length from your wrist to your elbow.

3) Place the two ends together.

4) Tie the end pieces into a knot. The result will be a loop of thread about the radius of a small serving bowl.

5) Put your four fingers into the loop leaving out the thumbs.

6) Take one hand and twirl it around three or four times. This will join the thread in the middle into a twirl. This is what is used for the hair removal.

7) When using the thread you must remember opposites. If you want the hair taken out using the left side of the loop, your right hand is used to manipulate the thread.

8) Line up the left side of the twirl along the hairs you would like removed and with your right hand use scissor motions to widen the right side of the loop. As this is done the twirl moves to the left removing all hairs in its path.

9) Practice makes perfect. When doing it your self practice, practice, practice.

Although I wouldn't recommend threading for you legs or bikini line, it is very effective on facial hair. It is sometimes said that "old tricks are the best trick" and threading is a great example of this.
