Overwhelmed by information and want to know how to pick the best ergometer or rowing machine? Not long ago I was in your shoes, literally. Whether you want to burn calories or get an impact-free full body workout, rowing machines can accomplish it while letting you do it at your own speed. With each segment of the row, different muscle groups are targeted including, shoulders, neck, chest, back, abs, arms, glutes, and legs - all user controlled based on how fast and how hard you pull.
After considering my options and evaluating different machines based on impact level, my workout goal, price, and whether they would be able to fit in my limited space, I chose a rower because it could do all of the above. Remember two things: cost and function.
COST
Decide what you are willing to spend. Options range from basic function to luxury. The quieter it is, the more expensive, otherwise it functions the same. Some rowers have additional features such as heart rate monitors or rowing software (log tracking and online competitions) or can be upgraded later. Rail length or what material it is made of also impact price.
FUNCTION
Basic rowing machines give full body workouts and consistent results without added distraction. Some are equipped with rowing monitors that can electronically submit times for competition qualification, useful for serious athletes. Beyond that, more options are available but relate to noise, comfort, or appearance and don't affect burning calories, increasing flexibility or improving strength.
