Our sun-filled holiday began in Split, Croatia, the beautiful seaside town on the coast of this amazing country. We struck gold when the hostel receptionist had decided to put us up in her apartment rather than in the dingy hostel we had booked. We found ourselves in the city centre in a self-contained apartment, 2 minutes from everything one could possibly need.
Split has a lot to offer and the magic of Diocletion's Palace, a world Heritage and listed UNESCO site is truly amazing, the faade of the palace is nearly exactly as it stood in 1305, once you have explored the palace and its remarkable surroundings, be sure not to miss the Bell Tower, hopefully you're not afraid of heights and will make it more than half way up, unlike me. The shallow waters of the beach in Split isn't exactly what you would expect of the Adriatic but it's relaxing nonetheless and if, like me you haven't seen water for a long time, it definitely does the job.
The cobblestone streets of the city will keep you busy for hours, apart from the fact that it is very easy to get lost, you will find yourself stopping at cafs and gelato stands hidden in meter wide alleyways as each one has a distinct charm to it. You cannot go past the fruit markets just outside the old city, without stopping for a peek. The fruit from Croatia is one of a kind, sink your teeth into some peaches or watermelon, I guarantee you wont have had fruit this sweet before.
With many bars and clubs to choose from, there is something for everyone for a great evening out. Choose between the beach club overlooking the shoreline or the cocktail bar looking over the bay on the promenade, there are many great bars and clubs hidden in the corners of the city, to find the best ones, simply explore the streets yourself, you really can't go wrong. For the more relaxed holiday-goers, grab a cuppa on the promenade and sit in the still evening air as you watch Croatian life go by.
