What you need to know when shopping for an elliptical machine

The elliptical trainer is one of the best tools for exercise available. When shopping for an elliptical exercise machine, there are a few things to look for. First and foremost is the "footprint." When in a store, elliptical trainers are usually lined up next to each other in an area much larger than most home gyms. Because of the size of the showroom, the machine may appear small. An elliptical is going to need a space about seven feet long and two and a half feet wide. When standing upon an elliptical, a person will need head clearance of about seven feet.

A good elliptical is going to be heavy, especially if it is going to be used often. If it is too light, it will shift as it is being used. If it is being placed on a hard wood or linoleum floor, one should consider a rubber mat (to protect the floor and limit shifting).
It should have large "shoes" (the place were you put your feet), to offer flexibility for foot placement. The trainer should also have various intensity levels, and various incline levels.
Finally, a good elliptical trainer should offer a few extras, for example:
*Pre-programmed routines
*The ability to create custom routines
*Heart rate monitor
*Water bottle holder
*Lockable wheels
These extras do not make your workout any better, but they do offer conveniences that can allow you more flexibility in your training.
Finally, one should always consider price. The more an elliptical trainer costs does not mean it is a better machine. When shopping for a good trainer, compare the features, not the size or color.
