How to tell if you're a flaky employee

For those of us who have already identified ourselves as "flaky" two things must be kept in mind. First, in our politically correct society, we prefer to be called "eccentric." Second, being eccentric is not always bad, but you must know the characteristics that can be potentially nerve wracking to your fellow employees and know when, to the best of your abilities, to act normal.

While "flaky" can have multiple meanings, it is most commonly characterized by qualities such as absentmindedness, goofiness, idiosyncratic behavior, be-bopping optimism, or good-natured silliness. Any of these qualities may be overlooked if a person has one, but having small amounts of all can be workplace suicide. How do you know if you are flaky and, more importantly, how do you keep it from destroying you at work?

RESPONSIBILITIES: Does your supervisor avoid giving you responsibilities at work, even though you are imminently qualified? It could be that your inability to focus makes you seem irresponsible, even though it is not your fault. Watch the people who are given more opportunities and responsibilities. Are they able to meet deadlines? Do they work well without supervision?

*Solution: Ask to be buddied up with someone on a project or assignment. Explain that you are trying to develop better skills and would like the opportunity to work with a mentor. This is a great first step and shows real initiative on your part.

FOREGETFULNESS: Flaky people often have terrible short-term memories. This can make them seem like they are ambivilent as to whether a job gets done or not, when, in fact, it is very upsetting to them when this happens. If you are one of those people who continues to beat yourself up over forgetting something important, the rest of the world might not understand the obstacles you face daily.

*Solution: Meet with your supervisor one on one. Explain the challenge you face and let them know what steps you are taking to be better at it. For instance, keeping the calendar on your computer set to remind you of important meetings or projects will be a great help. It will beep or make an audible sound until you take care of it. Also, have a cube mate or buddy to remind you. This is a VERY effective method because both show you are taking proactive steps toward solving the problem.

ORGANIZATION: This one is tough. Flaky people are often very unorganized, so it is going to be a perpetual cross for you to bear. The only way to combat this is to get some sort of system that works
