CHOOSING MAJOR KITCHEN APPLIANCES
Whether you're remodelling or building a new home, there are certain things you should keep in mind when it comes time to purchasing your new kitchen appliances.
First of all, you need to know the dimensions of the area where your refrigerator will be placed. The current standard measurements are 36" wide by 70" high or less for most full-size side by side and bottom freezer style refrigerators. If you're planning to purchase a refrigerator with the freezer above the refrigerator, then the measurements will vary greatly. You also need to decide if you want a counter depth or a standard depth refrigerator. A counter depth will appear more built-in and give you more space in your kitchen, but they cost much more and typically have less space inside than a standard depth.
If you're planning to purchase a wall oven and built-in cooktop, then you will need to decide if you want a singe or double wall oven, or perhaps a single wall oven with a microwave above. You will also need to know if your space will allow for a 30", 27" or 24" wide oven. The height and depth of your cabinets are also important with wall ovens, so be sure to measure carefully.
Cooktops are typically 30", 36", or 48". Be sure to write down all of your measurements of the space available for each appliance before you go shopping.
If you will be purchasing a free-standing or slide-in range, then you will need to decide if you want a hood vent or a microwave/hood vent combination over the range. In order to install a microwave over the range you will have to have a cabinet above the range so you will have something to mount it to. You also will need at least 66" minimum from the floor to the bottom of the cabinet. Although 66" is the minimum requirement by most manufacturers, I suggest no less than 68". If you go less than 68" then it is more difficult to see the controls on your range or cooktop because they will be blocked from view by your microwave.
As for the dishwasher, all are a standard 24" wide unless you will be purchasing an apartment size 18" dishwasher.
Once you have all of the measurements for where your appliances will be placed, then you need to decide on the color. The most popular color for appliances is currently stainless steel, but you might also like black or even a classic white. Don't even consider almond or bisque as these are completely outdated and out of style. Besides, most manufacturers have discontinued bisque and almond over the past year.
