Writing for Helium: How to obtain feedback for your writing

valuable because we might be too close to our own work and overlook potential room for improvement.

There are two rules of protocol when posting an article for critique in any area.

* Correctly post the url for easy access

Learn how to post the url so that responding writers can simply click on the link and gain access to your article. When the posting screen is opened for a new post, there is a blue icon at the top left above the screen. Click on that icon and brackets will appear on the screen. Post the url to your article between the brackets and when you click on the submit button the url will be red, indicating you have linked it correctly. You are apt to receive more response from writers if they can click on the link and immediately access your article.

* Acknowledge response received

When writers take the time to comment on your writing at your request, it behooves you to post a thank you, whether or not their advice has been useful to you.

An added courtesy is to return to the post after the revision and leapfrog have been accomplished to let those who responded have an opportunity to read your improved article. Many writers are enthusiastic about supporting their peers and will appreciate seeing your successful revision.

Often new members are intimidated to take advantage of the Writer's Critique forum. Participation is encouraged as this is a learning tool and benefit from both perspectives. If you post a request and receive feedback, you benefit. If you give comments to another writer's request, it is surprising how your own writing will improve as you use the same critical eye on your own work that you practice in critiquing the work of others.

Whether we give feedback, or acknowledge feedback we have received, we want to remember to always be courteous and kind in our posts.

"Writers helping writers" is Helium's philosophy, and in keeping with that philosophy, feedback is readily available to all Helium members if we know where to look.

"When we help another up the mountain, we are that much closer to the top ourselves."
