Until recently, I was misinformed about Paris Hilton. For the longest time I could have sworn she was a fictional character. Waxy and robotic on camera, no facial expressions just this empty and shallow look, and living the life of what must be characterized as fictional. Then I find out she is real(I remain skeptical about this revelation), as are her movies and music CD's, much to my eyes and ears chagrin. In this ever increasing world of reality television, 24 hour a day news cycles reporting on everything from Obama's grade school teacher being picked up for shoplifting to Britney's latest breakdown, we as a public long for some escapism. Where can one turn to when the reality of reality becomes too close to our reality?
Somewhere found on the yellowed pages of your favorite comic book, or on a television show long since syndicated, within the chapters of your favorite novel, or even on an animated cel, we all have grown up with a set of favorite fictional characters we hold near and dear to our hearts. Charlie Brown, Spock, Frankenstein, Count of Monte Cristo, Oliver Twist, Pippilongstocking, and all the rest of their kin residing in the realm of the imaginary.
Some of my favorites skew from the norm. I've retained most of these characters since I was an impressionable young kid jumping from his deck battling Sleestaks or Vermithrax Pejorative in the land of Urland. I soared in the air as Superman, swung on weblines as Spiderman. I have found archaeological treasures as Indiana Jones, was a Master of the Universe in Eternia, and have put an end to many an attempted alien invasions by the reptilian "Visitors". Despite the countless adventures my fictional friends and I have shared, some still, to this day, resonate louder than the others.
Robin Hood. What boy wouldn't be infatuated with a bow wielding marksmen living in the forest, bucking the system, beloved by the people, and doing what he wants when he wanted to? I saw the movies, I read the book, I watched television shows. The Robin Hood character was my first introduction into the vigilante before I knew what a vigilante was.
Cookie Monster. It is a gentle balance to find the in between of a horrifying blue monster and a lovable children's character. Jim Henson's dough downing puppet hit the mark. Bigger than most of the Sesame Street characters(Big Bird and Snuffy obviously know no peers) and shoveling in cookies or any inanimate object reminding him of cookies down his throat made him my reason for
