Choosing the right instrument and learning how to play

There are some lucky people who have grown up playing a musical instrument and are extremely happy with it. But for the rest of us it may not be so easy to decide exactly what instrument we want to learn. Here are some little tips to help you make your decision and find the perfect instrument for you.

1. First of all, you have to decide what kind of music you want to be able to play. This doesn't have to be very specific, but it is important for obvious reasons. Imagine trying to play heavy metal with a bagpipe...

2. Once you have decided your musical genre, it is time for the hard part. Instruments! At this point you have to be realistic. You have to weigh up how much time you have to practice, against the cost of the instrument itself and any additional lessons you may want. Here are some simple questions to ask yourself when trying to make this decision:

Do you find yourself tapping your hands and feet along with the beat of music? If so, maybe playing Drums would appeal to you?

Do you tend to nod your head to in time with the music? Perhaps, the Bass Guitar could be the instrument for you?

Can you read sheet music? and enjoy classical? Maybe the piano would suit you?

These types of questions will help you to determine an instrument to chose. Whilst deciding also keep in mind the costs, the space you have to practice (drum kits and pianos take up quite a lot) and your own personal preferences. There is no point in trying to learn an instrument just because it is convenient or inexpensive. Learning takes up a lot of time and needs a high level of commitment. But it should also be a fun and satisfying experience. It won't be easy, and even if you don't chose the right instrument the first time around you can always keep trying. I tried piano and guitar before i found the right instrument for me (Bass) just keep trying and you will get there. Now you hopefully have a clearer idea on which instrument you would prefer to play. So now let's look at some ways to learn and practice.

1.Everyone learns in different ways. Some find it easy to dive straight in and learn from making mistakes, whilst others like to research first and know before hand what they are doing. There is no right or wrong way to learn an instrument, everyone will have their own preferences. I would suggest having lessons, if you are learning guitar or similar instruments. If you can not afford this, there are plenty of 'Teach-Yourself' books and DVD's available that can be just as helpful.

2. If you are planning to join a band, you must research your instrument, and understand the role it plays. Then start playing with someone else as soon as possible. The quicker you get used to the sound of your instrument in addition to other instruments that will be played, the better.

3. Daily practice is essential. This may sound like a big commitment but it is the most beneficial thing you can do. This doesn't necessarily mean you have to spend 6 hours every single day practicing, even just 15 minutes a day will help you to significantly improve your skills.

Remember, learning an instrument is supposed to be fun. Don't get discouraged if you find it difficult at first. Your hard-work and determination will pay off with time.
