Getting smooth legs, underarms, and bikini line is something most women spend a lot of time and money trying to do. For the ultimate in smooth skin, you can try laser hair removal but it is very costly. Waxing gives great results but can be quite painful. For the majority of women, shaving is the method of choice but the process often includes nicks, bumps, cuts, and razor burn. However, there are some ways you can minimize these problems.
PRE-SHAVE
Before shaving, it's important to have the proper supplies and to prepare the area:
1. Purchase a good razor. Either disposables or refillable razors are fine, but it's essential that you either use a new one or change the blade after 4 or 5 uses. I have found that the two-blade razors work best. Any more than that and razor burn becomes a problem.
2. Find a shaving cream you like. Your choice will vary depending on your preferences. I like Aveeno's Sensitive Skin formula. It works well for me. If you aren't terribly sensitive to fragrance, you might choose one with a nice scent. The main consideration is to find a shaving cream that lathers well and lubricates the skin.
3. Take a warm bath or shower. This helps soften the hair and skin before shaving.
4. Take a pill. Yes, you heard it right. If you often experience irritation immediately after shaving, it's helpful to take an over-the-counter NSAID (like Tylenol or Advil) about half an hour before shaving. This will help reduce inflammation.
SHAVING
Now it's time to start shaving. Make sure you have good lighting and your supplies on hand.
1. Lather up. Apply an even layer of shaving cream to the area you want to shave.
2. Using short, even strokes, start shaving. On your legs, shave from the ankle upward, against the direction of hair growth. This will give you the smoothest shave possible. For the underarms, shave down, then up, then across. This is because underarm hair grows in different directions. When shaving the bikini line, it's best to hold the skin taut and shave with the direction of growth. This helps prevent ingrown hairs and razor burn on this sensitive skin. However, I'll address the bikini line separately in a minute with some tips specifically for that area.
3. Rinse well and feel with your hand to see if you missed any spots, going over them a second time if needed.
POST-SHAVE
After shaving it's important to pamper your skin a bit to keep it smooth and soft.
1. Apply moisturizer. You can use any lotion you like but if you're prone to itching or bumps after
