Sonnet for an American Poet laureate

Where are you tonight Mr. Zimmerman?
Are you looking for your friend Mr. Jones,
roaming the winding roads Manhattan.
I have been trying to reach you by phone,
but your mind is lost in some foreign land.
How does it feel to be such a poet,
laying in the gutter with complex dreams.
If you are so hurt why don't you show it.
Tell us lies through the smoke rings of your schemes.
I promise you I'll take them for the truth.
All I need is a just a little more time.
While I talk of your dreams with Dr. Seuss.
I am reminded of your simple rhyme
"I'll be in your dreams if you'll be in mine."
