How to find people in your area to play in your band

by Kate Johns

Created on: August 16, 2008

Finding people that live in your area to play in your band is a simple matter of adversiting. And because you are just starting out you have to round up your band members as cheaply as possible.

ASK FRIENDS AND FAMILY

The first thing you should do is look to your friends and family to make a complete band. When still in high school is there anyone you know right now that can play an instrument well that you get along with? In other words is there someone who is cool, laid back with a lot of personality, drive, that is adventurous that can handle touring the world, while becoming rich and famous? You never know your brother or sister might be able to play the drums and jam with the best of them. There are many family members who have become rich and famous by playing music together, such as the Jacksons, the Jonas Brothers, and three members of INXS.

HIGH SCHOOL BAND

Now, as geeky as this may sound, look to your high school band as well as your circle of friends. If you are in the band at high school then even better. Just because the bandleader doesn't want anyone to stray and get down and funky, looking in the band can really work for your future career. Start talking to other kids in the band and see if they love what they are doing and want to further their musicial careers. Some kids could care less and some you will be able to tell right away if they have the musical chops and the personality necessary to become a member of a band.

You can also put up notices all over the school to get prospective band mates. This may get you a great selection of people to choose from or it might lead you down a path that goes nowhere. It's worth a try, so give some kids a quick tryout and see if there are any possiblties in the mix. For people that are out of school ask around at work for prospective musicians. Put a notice on the bulletin board, and give people a tryout.

ADVERTISE

Another way of getting people in your band is to advertise on the Internet. Besides sending e-mails to everyone you know, set up a MySpace page and start playing music. Tell people what you want from them. Do you need a bass player or the entire band? Do you need a lead singer or will you be handling that coveted role.

Advertise in a free local newspaper to get people from your area into your band. Leave a phone number if you like or your e-mail address. Tell exactly what kind of musicians you are looking for. And it may be wise to start off with the least amount of musicians as possible, because when
