How an online degree is increasingly legitimate

The Internet has brought our world into a new era. Information, skills and interpersonal connections are no further away from us than our fingertips. The benefits of this technology have touched every corner of our lives. We no longer have to go to the source of information - with the help of our laptop, we can bring the information to us, anytime, anywhere.

Online education has opened up an entirely new avenue of educational opportunities. Traditional educational experiences required the student to take time out of their life to devote a significant amount of time and money to pursue their goals. Often it involved moving away from home to a campus environment. In the real world not everyone is eighteen years old, fresh out of high school, with enough money available to take themselves out of the workforce for an extended period of time. Often, those with obligations, or not enough income, were forced to take employment at the level of their limited education, forcing them to work at jobs beneathe their abilities because they could not avail themselves to educational opportunities.

Early online training programs were often looked at with scepticism by the employment community. Old habits die hard and those who pursued their education in the traditional manner expected the same of their potential employees. It didn't take long for some of the true value of online education to become apparent. One of the reasons online education is a superior method of gaining knowledge, especially in the eyes of a discerning potential employer, is that a successful online student must be independent, determined and have the ability to stick with a job to completion. Without the watchful eye of a classroom instructor to set the pace and keep things moving, the online student must depend on himself to be accountable for assignment completion. Accountability rests in the hands of the student - and this is a valuable asset in any employee.

There is no end to the options for educational pursuits online. Local community colleges offer programs at the Associate Degree level. Traditional four year institutions offer all or part of their curriculum via Internet access. Many skill sets can be obtained from online courses, from learning computer software programs to learning to become a grant writer. The course content is the same as traditional offerings, the only difference is the delivery method.

Obtaining an online degree is hard work. An online student, in order to be successful at any
