When I think off mens cosmetics I find it means something different for me as I am a West Indian male UK born so when it comes to grooming etc the UK market doesnt really consider the Black male population like America does. There have always been Black and Asian shops what sell certain products like Black hair wigs, various hair products ,and of course the ever popular cocoa butter. But these shops are usually only available in inner city areas populated by certain minorities,so if you live some where suburban or a small village etc,you would have to drive certain miles and stock up.And what products if any would main stream TV advertise for Black men?
Ive lived in the UK all my life and recall maybe the odd advert with a Black male on it,which I beleive was for a shaving product. So are men of colour seen as typical men? well if not we should be the typical Black male can be seen representing his country for various sports and high profile jobs. Also when my freinds and I are getting ready we all usually swap stories on which is the best shaveing cream or aftershave etc. Also you have to remember that the Black skin has a different texture and feel(Hence a lot off Black males look good for their age)so we have to find and use the right products other wise our skin gets dry and scaley.Dont get me wrong its not all bad Ive noticed some of the Uk big companys like sainsbury and tesco have started stocking some Black food products which is a good start. And Boots does stock certain make up etc for the Black females but thats as far as it goes really.
Now the sceptic amongst you might say thats because there isnt a market for it right? wrong and wrong again. There is a market for Black male products as there is a market for all the ethnic foods which sell millions each year. When it comes down to it most males of color wash twice a day using similar products to white males, most brush their teeth twice a day,we use similar deodrants,we also like to look cool and smart in our appearance.
So are we the Black males seen as the typical males? well not really in the UK but I see a change as white youths are copying the young black males hip hop n reggae style.Advertise executives will see this opturnity with dollar signs in their eyes and start having Black British role models along side David Beckham advertiseing 'just for men'or some other products.
So there you have it, we are all agreed when it comes to cosmetics for males lets include all males all races. After all why should our white brothers be the only ones whose wife and girlfreinds nag them to try some male products of TV.I can see the look on some of my freinds faces when they receive their fist male make up set,or the male sarong, male G string (ouch!,Male mascara, male manicure etc.And lets not forget the male health spa where you can get massage(cool),get your chest, bum, privates waxed, eye brows plucked and ater all that make appointment at the plastic surgeons.Hang on a minute! in fact just leave us Uk Black males out of this cosmetics for males crap were cool thakns but no thanks Peace.
