Reflections: Worrying

Worrying is natural for humans. Please do not ask me why but it seems we were all born with the gene for worry. I'm so expert on this subject of what is in our genes and how they affect us; however, I have seen enough people that worry to convince me that it must be a gene thing.

The problem I find is that worrying can, and often does, consume some people. It tends to dominate their every waking moment. If we are not careful we can all get caught up in the worry cycle. To worry can be a good thing if done in moderation. We do walk a fine line though in this area. Moderation can easily turn to an all consuming obsession if not held in check. The problem, or should I say challenge, comes with how to moderate the worrying process.

Like most things I believe that it all boils down to discipline. While discipline seems to be an easy word to understand, implementing discipline is all together much, much harder to accomplish.

Now for the cold hard facts, we all have the same opportunities. Each of us, no matter our so-called station in life has only 24 hours in a day. The difference between all is how we use those 24 hours. A study of the more successful people reveals that they are very organized with the time allowed. They tend to be more mindful of their time and work hard to allow the time needed in a productive manner.

The rest of us allow our thoughts, as they randomly enter our conscious mind, to dominate our time. The solution tends to evade the masses. While what I am about to share with you may seem a bit childish, it does work because I have seen it used very affective over the course of many years.

A case study of my Mother reveals that one can use time management to handle worrying. First you need to understand that Mom was one of the masses that let her mind drift and become consumed with things that worried her as they entered her thoughts. The solution was to find a way to get control of her discipline.

Being a long time member of a group that would rather remain nameless taught her that time management is so very important. She devised a simple solution, almost childlike in its simplicity, to allow her to gain control of her time. It is important to understand that by nature Mom worried about everything. But for well over a decade she as tried, and proved, this method works.

First Mom uses little scraps of paper to write down everything she thinks is worthy of devoting time to worrying about it. What she does is write all these things on paper scraps and
